30 Jul Worried About A Tooth Extraction?
Your dentist is here to help you maintain a naturally healthy smile. If you have a cavity, we can help repair it with a dental filling or other restoration. When you break a tooth, your dentist can plan how to restore it with a crown. Unfortunately, though, there are some circumstances when you need to have a damaged tooth extracted to save your smile. We understand it can be intimidating, but at The Dental Place in Grand Prairie, TX, we’re here to make the experience as comfortable as possible for you. In our blog today, we will discuss why tooth extractions are necessary and what to expect from the process.
Removing Wisdom Teeth
One of the most common extractions we perform is wisdom teeth removals. This third set of molars comes in much later than your other pearly whites, which means they may not have enough space to fully come in. As a result, wisdom teeth can often feel uncomfortable because they are impacted. We may recommend removing these before they cause major problems for you, such as discomfort, infection, or shifting your teeth around. Depending on when they begin developing, we may need to work around your orthodontic treatment to ensure your smile does not become misaligned.
The Damaged Tooth Cannot Be Restored
As we mentioned earlier, if you have injured your tooth in any way, we’ll do our very best to repair the damage and restore your smile. However, if the injury is too severe, we may not be able to repair the damage. Instead, your dentist may recommend removing the tooth to save your smile from an infection or discomfort. For instance, if a cavity has reached a severe stage and cannot be repaired with a root canal, it may need to be taken out to avoid harming your other teeth.
Keeping You Comfortable
When you come in for your extraction, we may take X-rays of the area and closely examine it. Then, we may use sedation to help you feel relaxed and comfortable throughout the procedure. If you are having your wisdom teeth removed, this procedure may take longer because we may remove up to four of your third molars. If just a single tooth is being extracted, this may be a shorter procedure. Remember to have a friend or family member available to take you to and from your appointment, as sedation side effects can vary depending on the patient. After your procedure, we’ll send you home with specific aftercare instructions to follow.
